The first step of solving a problem is admitting you have one............
Open letter to John Daly from your fans,
Why do we love you so? Let us count the ways.....
1.You are overweight and bloated, so are we.......yeah!
Editor's note:
How that is possible with all the Diet Cokes and cigarettes you inhale, I'll never know. Whoops, forgot about the case of beer a day and Hooters sponsorship, I'm guessing you order the breaded wings....
2. You can still hit a golf ball 300 yards. We can't. You da man.
Editor's note:
Daly can't make a cut, but who cares about posting a score anyway.......
3. You've had 4 wives, Most of us have had only one. Man, I wish I could afford to rotate the stock like that.
Editors note:
Cost of alimony paid out could have supported The First Tee Project for an entire year.
4. Won 2 Major Championships. Most professional golfers can't say that.
Editors Note:
Daly's talent has never been questioned. Tiger Woods once said "if he had Daly's talent he wouldn't have to practice so hard."
5. What does Tiger know anyway? He's all focused and driven to succeed. He's not like us or John Daly.
Editors Note:
No, Tiger isn't like 99.9% of us, but if the top person in your field worldwide came to you and told you that you were more talented than they were, wouldn't that motivate you to be the best accountant, mechanic, seamstress, writer etc. that you could be?
6. We think it's cool for John to hang out during golf tournaments and drink with the fans in the hospitality suites.
Editors Note:
Really, is it cool at your job to start drinking in the middle of the day with customers? I can't say I ever walked into Target and seen the floor manager knocking back a few with customers during the 4th of July sale.
7. What's the big deal, he's not hurting anyone?
Editors Note:
There have been several accusations of pushing and shoving one of his many wives while intoxicated. But that pales in comparison to the mental scars he may be inflicting on his children. Ever seen your dad's mugshot on the national news before?
8. Well, he's got a big heart.
Editors Note:
No doubt, John Daly has given generously to many causes and charities. But think how much more he could have done if alcohol and poor decision making hadn't cost him his career and the potential for earning ten's of millions of dollars...
9. Well, he's just a good ole boy from Arkansas.....
Editors Note:
Not sure what that means. Some of our brightest minds and national leaders have come from Arkansas. Ever hear of the name Clinton? If the implication is that John is not smart enough to make good decisions then he should have hired some "good people" to help guide his career. I'd like to meet the person who thought it was a good idea for him to shoot the video of him playing golf with nothing but a pair of jeans on. Disgusting.
10. He'll calm down eventually, you can't go on like that forever.....
Editors Note:
Final thought....
We have all been enablers for John Daly, however we should not feel guilty if his life ends tragically. He has the resources to turn his life around, but only he can decide to "drive the green" or "lay-up and play safe". Even par is always a good score.

"Remain calm all is well"
Kevin Bacon shouted over and over again in the final scene of the movie, Animal House, when he was trying to calm the riot in the streets caused by the boys from Delta house. I recall that not working out to well for Kevin.
The current volatility in the markets and the economy makes me feel as if I've started a round of golf with four straight birdies and somehow managed to be over-par at the turn. You don't question things when you're "going good" but you feel completely frazzled when "it goes south", and the good start seemed like a long time ago and you can't remember how to get back to the beginning.
Sound familiar to any of my fellow golfers out there? How do we keep the good times going with our golf swing?
First of all, get through the round by painting visual pictures of your golf shots during your hot start. You have to forget about the poor shots at the end of your nine.
Focus on one quality shot at a time, not a score for the hole you are playing.
Pay attention to your short game. How many times have you lost focus and chunked a simple chip or started 3-putting? Minimize the damage during the round and keep your head up. You will still be able to salvage a round. Who knows, with the right attitude and plan, that hot start may show up for the last 4 holes of the round!
In between rounds, my advice is simple, keep your practice sessions short and focus on quality not quantity. You don't want to pound hundreds of balls when you are swinging well. Chances are, you will get tired and start incorporating bad habits into your swing. Afterall people, there are only so many Vijay Singh's in the world and chances are you aren't one of them.
You should never feel physically exhausted after a practice session. Save the aerobics for the gym or track!
Focus on good form and good swings. Always end your practice sessions on a positive note with a solid shot or by holing a putt. Never leave on a miss or a poorly struck shot. If you have a suspect mind like me, you will focus on the cause and effect of your last poor shot and undo all of the good work you had done that day.
As I keep reminding everyone, there is reason I work for a living in golf instead of playing for a living in golf. Remember, like I tell my kids, "do I say not as I do"
If all else fails go to the bar and have a beer and think how lucky you are not to be working on a Tuesday!
I'm a little old to be star-struck and hero-worship should be for kids under the age of 12....... I've met my share of sports stars and been around some celebrities in my life and have never gotten the vapors or turned into babbling idiot. I'm perfectly capable of that on my own, as most of you know by now.
But I may have a hard time keeping my game under some manner of control if El Tigre was pulling a loop for my group. Great story about Tiger caddying for John Abel a 59-year-old guy from New Jersey who won an online sweepstakes as a winner of the "Tee off with Tiger" contest! Tiger went nine holes, carrying the clubs, wearing the bib, signing everything for John, talking to his family, giving local advice and even showing John the spot where he made the famous put tto get into the playoff at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines this year. John didn't make the putt, by the way!
I know Tiger was getting paid, but the one quote that really stuck with me about his experience was "how much of a down-to-earth-guy he really is," in referring to Tiger.
I am unabashed Tiger Woods fan, but one of the things I admire about him besides his golf, is his ability to stay out of the limelight for all the wrong reasons. Is Tiger perfect? No, are any of us,? Notme but I have never heard stories about dubious behavior or anyone who knows him say that he is not a likeable guy.
I think we all want our heroes to be amazing on their sports stage and regular guys or gals off it. From my perspective, Earl's boy fits the bill in that regard. If my kids want to worship Tiger for a while, I'm more than ok with that.

During this time of year it is important to give thanks........
I know what you are thinking......Thanksgiving in early October? This guy has completely lost it!
Not so fast, my friends. Now more than ever, I should be giving thanks to those around me who give me meaning and purpose to my existence.
In these hard economic times when all of us are "suffering," we need perspective and contemplation.
Afterall, I am fortunate to work in an industry that revolves around play.
I am fortunate enought to work for a general manager and ownership group that pays me enough to put a nice roof over my family's head and two cars in the driveway.
This ownership group also encourages me to explore new horizons in the golf industry whether its writing this blog or co-hosting a golf talk radio show.
I have the option of deciding when I want to play golf, not if I can play golf.
I live in a wonderful community with close access to the ocean, schools, golf courses and work, all within a two-minute drive.
I have a wonderful wife and three children. My wife understands every one of my quirks and has learned to ignore most of them. My children are active, healthy kids who happen to be outstanding students and have a love of all sports.
What more could a guy ask for?
Do I complain about the cost of gas, the drop in the stock market, delaying a vactation or upgrade for the house? Yes.
Should I? No, but I don't begrudge my friends and colleagues who talk about the current state of affairs, because I do it as well.
But when you consider the way some of our fellow human beings forge an existence in poverty and despair.........
It puts things in perspective if only (unfortunately) for a moment.

After further review, the ruling on the field stands.......
Don't you just love late summer and early fall. There is so much going on in the sports world....... golf season is winding down, baseball pennant chases are heating up and the start of football, both college and the pro game, are dominating the discussion. The grill room is never better than right now so make sure you pay a visit after your next round.
After all, with all the sports action to discuss, you don't even have to listen to that idiot in your group who wants to replay everyone of his shots at the bar even though you just spent 5 hours with this nitwit on the golf course.... And to make matters worse, you just lost your match to him by three putting from 10 feet on the last hole.
Well the day is not a total loss yet, not when your fantasy team(s) are kicking butt and Sunday night is now football night in America.... being patriotic Americans, you know the family and I are watching.
Remember those fancy Sunday dinners at your house growing up? I do, remember how they sucked, well not anymore, at our house its all about eating with your hands, drinking beer (adults only) and working the remote like a maniac, you know the drill football, football, golf, and back to football.
"Hey kids get my laptop, I can't get off the couch and I think that guy who just scored is on one of my fantasy teams......"
Survey: What was more objectionable? Boo Weekley's butchering of the English language or his white socks with black shoes on Ryder Cup Sunday?
Check-in next week for a full Ryder Cup and Fed Ex Cup wrap-up.

Welcome back fellow players of the game called golf, or as my man Ted Knight aka Judge Smails states in the famous dinner table scene from the movie Caddyshack... "of course over there they call it gawf" referring to his friend the Secretary of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. Great stuff always makes me laugh. Don't get it, don't have to, just go with it and try not to overthink it.
The PGA Tour FedEx Cup Playoffs have started this week. The top 144 on the Fed Ex Cup Points list are in the field and the 144th guy Lee Janzen (didn't know he still played ) and the 1st guy on the list Tiger are out, so the second place guy Kenny Perry takes the top spot. Speaking of Kenny Perry, he once again put himself in this writer's doghouse. He was complaining about the "tweaking" of the FedEx Cup Playoffs this year saying he didn't like the fact that there could be such big movements from the bottom of the standings to the top of the standings because of the new point structure. Kenny feels that the players who have played well all season should haven't to worry about guys making the final event or taking over spots from top guys who have played well all season. What's that Kenny? You never heard of teams or players in other sports "getting hot at the right time" or the prohibibitive favorite getting upset by a lower ranked opponent. Check Appalachian State vs. Michigan last year. Stanford vs. USC , NY Giants vs. New England Patriots and too many others to mention. Come on Kenny I never had a bone to pick with you before this season, but by not attempt to qualify for The U.S. Open, not traveling to The British Open and not even gutting out a second round at The PGA Championship and now complaining that no one else should have a chance to win the FedEx Cup Playoffs except for the top 30 guys on tour has qualified you in my opinion as The Number One Dork on Tour (move over Woody ) and maybe in sports for the year 2008. Has anyone done less with more this year than Kenny Perry and seemed lamer trying to defend it? I think not!
With golf's ultimate warrior Tiger Woods sidelined, I think Kenny may have set the coolness factor of golf back by about 5 years, maybe a Anthony Kim belt buckle to the head will knock some sense in to this dorkwad from Kentucky, and remind him that if we want golf to be taken seriously as a sport by non-golf fans you have to show for the majors and not whine about having to deal with competition from the rank and file. Have a shot of Jack and get your warpaint on Kenny...The Europeans are coming to invade your homestate of Kentucky for the Ryder Cup. No excuses, you better be ready!
Man, I'm ready for some football!
Pro Tip: If your having trouble making a weigh shift check out some of the theories behind The Stack and Tilt Swing. I think there is some merit to the fundamentals and have had some good ball striking success in the limited amount of time I have had to experiment with this newest swing craze. Just type "Stack and Tilt Golf Swing" in your search engine and should be able to print a 3-page primer on the swing.
Any questions about The Stack or Tilt or other swing theories of course you will want to consult your local PGA Professional at the golf course nearest you.
End of summer is near and the fall golf season is arriving soon. What better time to reward yourself for being a good mom or dad all summer by planning a golf trip to Myrtle Beach. Ladies Myrtle Beach just isn't for the guys.
Great restaurants, nightclubs and shopping along with the beach are just as welcoming to you as they are the fellows in your life. Heck, if they do a good job watching the house or the kids while your away, maybe you will bring them back a souvenir from Myrtle Beach. See you soon.
