Caledonia, True Blue Ranked Among South Carolina’s Top 5 Public Courses by Golfweek

Golfweek has released its always anticipated ranking of the best public courses in each state and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club were again honored as among golf rich South Carolina’s very best.

Caledonia was ranked as the Palmetto State’s third best public course while True Blue was No. 5 in Golfweek’s “Best 2024: Top public-access golf courses in every state.” Caledonia moved up one spot on the list and is now the Myrtle Beach area’s top ranked course.

The only layouts ahead of Caledonia are Kiawah’s Ocean Course, a major championship host, and Harbour Town Golf Links, home to an annual PGA Tour event. True Blue was ranked just behind The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, which hosted the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic In May.

Caledonia and True Blue, both Mike Strantz layouts, offer contrasting yet equally enjoyable experiences that have long made them favorites of traveling golfers. Strantz’s first solo design, Caledonia plays through a stunning piece of Lowcountry land, showcasing the expansive live oak trees and native beauty the area is renowned for.

Caledonia, which opened 30 years ago, is equal parts art and architecture, first revealing Strantz’s genius to the public. The experience is highlighted by the unforgettable 18th hole, a par 4 that requires a carry over water to a green that resides in the shadow of the clubhouse.

True Blue is a modern design, featuring generous fairways, many of them framed by rugged waste bunkers, and large undulating greens. The expansive layout provides mid to high handicappers great latitude while rewarding more skilled golfers for playing to the proper spots in the fairway.

With five par 5s and five par 3s, Strantz’s iconoclastic side was on full display at True Blue, and golfers are the beneficiaries, getting to enjoy a top 100 caliber layout and an unforgettable experience.

Highlighting the strength of the Myrtle Beach golf market, 13 of South Carolina’s top 20 public courses are located along the Grand Strand, with Caledonia and True Blue leading the way.
