Video Tip: Hitting the Low Spinning Chip Shot

What is the coolest shot in golf? Many will say it’s the low-flight, high-spin chip shot. Stuart Clark from the Steve Dresser Golf Academy in Pawleys Island, S.C. is here to show you how to hit that exact shot!

Stuart Clark:

Hi guys. My name is Stuart Clark. I’m one of the lead instructors here at the Steve Dresser Golf Academy at beautiful True Blue and Caledonia down in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Today we’re going to do a little bit of what we call pitching or chipping. It’s a little more of a pitch shot, showing you how to set up. Because a lot of times in our schools we see people that have great hands, but they’re set up in an improper way where they can’t be successful at pitching the ball. A lot of times we see people with their weight back and their shoulders are tilted back, and we’re always going to bottom out where we fat it or skull it either way.

So what I want you to do is take your golf club, I want you to put it in your sternum, and make a tail back here, and lean to where that tail is hitting inside your right leg. That’s going to tilt your shoulders downhill. Now, this isn’t something we’re doing when we’re trying to hit driver three bills, but this is something when we pitch, we want to feel like we’re going downhill and we’ve got our sternum tilted left. We’re going to pressure a little bit more in that lead side. And what we want to do is we want to move into the golf ball, hitting down angle attacks of 8, 9, 10, whatever. But we can’t do that if we’re tilted back.

So we want our shoulders kind of lower and down, working down into the ball, brushing the ground. So a lot of times we see they tilt back and they actually loft the ball too high, which doesn’t create a ton of spin, because everybody wants to hit that low spinner, and that low spinner is basically set up. So anyhow, we gather we want to hit these shots a little bit, kind of lower to spin the ball. So once we get that shoulder kind of going more downhill, you’re using your chest to hit that shot. That’s going to produce a low launching, high spinning pitch shot.
